Operating Instructions for Rear-Release Tweezer-Type Contact Removal Tools


Rear-release connector systems utilize specialized tweezer-type extraction tools to safely remove contacts from the wire side of the assembly. Mastering the precise mechanical sequence of expanding the internal retention clip prevent torn rubber environmental grommets and bent retention tines.

Standard Operating Procedure for Rear-Release Contact Removal

  1. Tool Selection: Select the correct contact removal tweezer model from the Tool Selection Data section of this manual to match your specific wire gauge and contact shoulder diameter.
  2. Expose the Work Area: Slide any accessories attached to the rear of the connector assembly—such as backshell adapters, cable clamps, or strain reliefs—completely back onto the wire bundle to establish clear access to the rear grommet face.
  3. Wire Grasp and Entry: Working entirely from the rear of the connector, compress the tweezer handles together to open the jaws and position them around the wire insulation. Reduce your hand pressure to let the semi-cylindrical tips close smoothly around the jacket. Note: Take care not to pinch, nick, or cut the insulation material with the metal edges.
  4. Axial Alignment and Insertion: Carefully slide the tool forward down along the wire insulation jacket. Align the tool tip perfectly axially (in a straight line) with the target environmental grommet cavity hole. Smoothly glide the tool tip straight forward into the connector grommet hole.
  5. Releasing the Clip: Continue pushing the tweezer tool straight inward until the tip completely “bottoms out” inside the insert cavity. Field Note: Technicians will feel a noticeable increase in mechanical resistance right before the tips bottom out. This resistance indicates the tool is passing inside the cavity to expand the internal spring clip fingers clear of the contact shoulder.
  6. Simultaneous Extraction: Maintain firm forward position with the tool to keep the internal clip expanded. Simultaneously pull gently on the wire conductor while withdrawing the tool, contact, and wire straight backward out of the connector grommet. Keep the tool body completely perpendicular to the face of the grommet throughout the entire extraction stroke to prevent internal tearing.
  7. Quality Audit and Stowage: Once clear of the wire bundle, compress the tweezer handles to expand the tips and detach the tool. Thoroughly inspect the micro-machined extraction jaws for any signs of tip flaring, metal fatigue, or alignment skewing. Return the asset back to its designated slot inside the protective tool kit case.

⚠️ CRITICAL CAUTION: PREVENT CAVITY AND JAW DAMAGE

Do NOT tip, cant, angle, twist, or rotate the extraction tweezer while the tips are positioned inside the connector grommet or dielectric insert cavity. Applying lateral leverage or torque while the steel tips are inside the rubber matrix will instantly slice the environmental sealing webs, shatter the delicate micro-tool tips, or permanently bend the internal contact retention tines. Furthermore, do NOT exert excessive force on the wire bundle. If the contact resists extraction or does not slide smoothly out of the cavity, immediately halt the operation. Withdraw the tool, inspect the wire alignment, clear any hidden dirt or debris blockages from the cavity, verify your tool sizing code, and repeat the procedure from step one.
